That's what I think.
I think this is preventing ????, and it does.
Different machines may need different tamper.
If you want to try, I may lend my tamper to you coz I've got a flat tamper piston. 
BTW, Macromedia Fireworks are great.
And. if the shape of coffee ground is perfect, there is no need for tamping.
